Enter paul ryan as running mate in'serious search' for VP

The race came to a close Saturday with a short but bitter contest where Ryan's campaign called in a number of former Romney aides, some with no experience in politics, to help him and former Romney chief strategist Stuart Stevens serve as running mates.

Ryan said he and Romney had no formal ties to the vice presidential selection, but the selection process for a vice presidential candidate was similar to that for the Massachusetts governor — which requires vetting by a Senate committee that convenes on a regular basis, but does not require congressional approval.

Romney held no news conference Monday after the Florida race ended in a tie.

The Senate GOP leadership and Ryan's campaign each confirmed Sunday they were reviewing the vice presidential selection, but did not indicate whether Ryan would accept the job or make his own run. The vice president's party leaders have said they plan to pick a candidate this week.

Democrats have suggested that the current crop of nominees have little experience or even less than Ryan has.

A top Republican strategist described Romney as the weakest candidate in an open Senate race.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Sunday that he was open to a challenge to Ryan and would look into that idea. But he expressed caution on the prospect of Ryan being given the pick.

"What you have to remember is that we're talking about an opening up for the U.S. Senate seat from Nevada, and we're still just beginning to evaluate these candidates,'' Reid said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Reid added: "The thing that you have to remember is that there's still not a lot of information in the Senate race about our Senate seats. So the race may be closed now.''

Democratic strategist John Weaver of Weaver Strategies, which is backing the current slate of Democratic presidential candidates, suggested that a Biden bid could energize Republican voters by drawing them to Washington and pushing them to the polls.

"That's the kind of effect Biden could have on this race... it can energize and energize the Republican base and energize the base could energize it," Weaver said in an interview with "NBC News Sunday.''

Some of those Republican candidates, like U.S. Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan and U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa of California, have been weighing a potential run.

Man injured during boat rescue

Samantha Coker, 21, was a third year student at Saint Thomas College in Manchester. She was one of about 50 people rescued from the boat during the incident.

The school's president, Dr Peter Nandy, called the rescue "extraordinary".

"To my knowledge, the boat that has been sunk, and is being towed around by the navy, is not a ship belonging to us in the slightest. It's not a vessel of our shipbuilding company, and it's not one of our engineers," he said.

He called it "an exceptional intervention" by the navy and a "great outcome".

Mr Nandy later spoke to BBC Radio 4's Today program, when asked if he should take credit for saving his fellow students.

He said: "The idea is to save children from drowning, and certainly if we are rescuing people who are in a boat full of kids, that's a great outcome for children."

At the start of the operation, crews from the Fleet Hospital Shipbuilding said: "The search and rescue operation is under way.
